As a copy editor for Wilsted & Taylor, a small publishing service that worked with museums, universities, and boutique presses, my job responsibilities went beyond merely editing and proofreading. I assisted with production management, juggling multiple projects and keeping track of each one from start to finish. During production, I was responsible for handling rare art or negatives of photographs that were often an artist's only copy. I was the last person to handle the page proofs before they went to the printer, and I checked bluelines for pages and covers. On many occasions, I took overtime and drove boxes of page proofs myself to FedEx to guarantee that deadlines would be met.

I handled complex projects, including travel guides in which I had to compare text against maps. I worked closely with painters to make sure that the catalog for a museum show went off without a hitch. For my toughest job, I had to collate three separate translations of a Palestinan poet into one coherent manuscript. This job was like a crash course in publishing and production, and the lessons I learned served me well, even when I moved back into online publishing.
